Second house design has come in. This time it’s a single level design with the carport/garage attached to but not part of the house. My wife is a big fan but I’m struggling with it a bit. At this point it is in 2d plans and I cannot really envision it. Overall the layout does seem a big smoother. Floor size has stayed the same but house is probably simpler (hopefully cheaper ) and we can likely start with a carport and turn it into a garage if and when needed.

We went back to Jeremy to ask to reshape 2 adjoining rooms thinking we could swap the 2 sizes but it’s not quite as simple as that. If I had to state what building a house was about it seems to be compromise. Change x means y or z will get bigger/smaller or more expensive. Every action seems to have a greater reaction then one would think. Having said that we have found it beneficial to talk to others about building houses as they will often mention what they regretted doing or not persevering with during their build. While we are in the concept stage it’s great to use the architect as a sounding board to see if ideas are going to work or be a pain.

I’m starting to get the feeling that architects need to be tolerant people!

Recently we got the measuring tape out and took some measurements out of a number of rooms in my parent’s house to try and visualise the size of some of the rooms. This helped us determine the minimum size we would want for both our den and bedroom plus gave us a good idea of the sizing for most of the other rooms. Time for another meeting with Jeremy.
